Here is a list so far of possible destinations for the South West Fly-In. Tucson – Ron Limbaugh and Carl Foster have both suggested Tucson. They have provided some links to area websites which look like a lot of fun. Carl wrote: Tucson International Airport is located about 1 hour south of Phoenix. We have the Pima Air Museum http://www.pimaair.org/pasmhome.shtml, which has an outdoor exhibit of everything from a Piper Cub to B-52s, an SR-71, and several hangars full of other planes, exhibits, and aircraft memorabilia. About 30 minutes south is the Titan Missile silo that runs tours through the underground facility. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is basically an indoor/outdoor zoo and native plant exhibit. Old Tucson Studios is where a lot of westerns were filmed.
Baja California – Allen Mason has suggested Baja California and that is a trip I really want to do. I am going to talk with him soon to see if we can arrange a flight there in the spring. At this next fly-in will take a list of names of who would be interested and we will start the ball rolling.
Long Beach California – Steve King has a good Idea. He wrote: How about “piggy backing” the AOPA convention in Long Beach.
KSEZ Sedona, AZ – Carl Foster also suggested Sedona, Arizona. He has been there during a Mooney fly-in and said it was great. He can pre-arrange it to make sure we are not there during another fly-in, there is ample parking. He feels that since there are a lot of weekend visitors to the airport, we would draw a lot of attention. Carl said that Sedona has a restaurant and hotel within walking distance, spectacular scenery, and interesting things to see and do. It is perched on the top of a mesa in red rock country. Sedona is also featured in the King video “Cross-country Flying.” The weather in October is usually VFR. The field elevation is a mere 4827 and the TPA is 6000.
Mojave California – Not much fun for me because I live here but the airport is host to over 300 stored airliners, The National Test Pilot School, Scaled Composites (Rutan) and many others. Not much to do in Mojave though. I could arrange a Maintenance Clinic to cover the things that non-A&P’s and Pilots can do on their aircraft and demonstrate how to lube, change oil and clean plugs and things like that. One nice thing about Mojave is that it’s close to the L.A. Area. We could all fly down to either Van Nuys or Fullerton (KFUL). Fullerton is next to Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm.
I am posting a vote on the MM Website today with these choices and I would like to here back from everyone. Just a side note: I plan to Vote for Sedona.
