What is the lates info on Garmin’s promised WAAS upgrade for the GNS430? What about Terrain? Upgrade pricing? Upgrades to the GNS480?
Here is the response I received today (10/25/2004) from Garmin. So much for the “Fall 2004” availability promise for WAAS in the GNS430:
1. When will WAAS be available for the 430?
Spring/Summer of 2005. The cost is $1500 and the update must be done at the factory.
2. When will Terrain be available for the 430?
This coming December/January. Cost is $500 for the updated software and additional database with terrain/obstacle information. Remains to be determined if the FAA will approve field updates through a Garmin dealer or if the update is factory-only.
3. What will be the combined upgrade cost?
$1500 and $500 respectively.
4. Will a trade-in be offered on 430s, toward 480s?
No. Some dealers will give a trade in allowance toward the purchase of new equipment. My experience has been that the 430 holds its value pretty well as there are not that many used units for sale. Ebay and trade-a-plane would also be good avenues to sell a used 430.
